Former UT Longhorn Derrick Johnson writes kids' book with wife Brittni

Derrick and Brittni Johnson prioritize reading for their kids and others in underserved schools.
Former University of Texas and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson is writing a new chapter in his work in children's literacy with a new children's book. Super DJ Saves Field Day, a fittingly sporty story co-written between Johnson and his wife, Brittni, will come out August 7.
The story follows a dad who becomes a superhero and cheers kids on while they compete on the field. It's not about winning, but doing their best and feeling encouraged to take on challenges, even when nerves get in the way. The story is recommended for a reading age of 7-11.
Fans who have followed Johnson past his football career may not be surprised to see he's become a children's book author. He has become known for a new project, Defend the Dream Foundation, which transforms school libraries with colorful and slightly sports-themed upgrades. The foundation also donates books that take into account culture and diversity.
There are more than 20 completed Discovery Dens in underserved schools so far, including six in Austin — the first den in Johnson's college town opened at Oak Springs Elementary School in 2022.
Sports and reading may be treated like opposites, culturally, but Johnson connects the activities through how they make children feel.
“The road to becoming a professional athlete was paved by people who helped me believe in myself and my ability to do hard things," said Johnson in a press release. "Every child deserves someone who helps them believe in themselves — and that’s what we hope this story does. It’s not about being the best, it’s about being your best and discovering the superpowers you already have inside you.”
Johnson himself is a father of six, and reading is important their household.
“Both at home and in the community, I’ve seen firsthand the power that literacy unlocks,” said Brittni Johnson. “We know how important it is for children to see themselves reflected in the books they read. Writing this book — with our own kids and the kids in our community in mind — has been such a powerful and meaningful experience.”
Super DJ Saves Field Day is published by Black Rose Writing. Pre-orders ($15.95 paperback, $21.95 hardcover) may be placed through the publisher or Amazon.
